All routes start at the trail centre. Pick the trail suited to your competency level and fitness. The MTB routes are reversed year on year to keep things interesting. Please make sure of the route direction before you start riding. Riding contra-flow is strictly prohibited, as it poses safety risks. Please stick to the current marked route at all times, even though you might be more familiar with the route going in the opposite direction. Keep an eye out for kudu, waterbuck, warthog, jackal, impala, zebra, cattle and more!
*Please note: follow the coloured ARROWS for the MTB routes. Should you see a paw print en route, you need to backtrack, as you have crossed onto a hiking trail.
No cycling is allowed on the hiking trails.
Hiking/Trail running
5 km Visarend Trail (Easy)
10 km Trail Ndebele Trail (advanced)
13/11 km Naboom Hike (Easy)
Hiking/trail running at Die Bosveld is a special experience. Not only is the area steeped in history with old Ndebele stone kraals dotting the koppie, but it also boasts a variety of unique trees like the mountain seringa, red ivory, kraalnaboom, giant euphorbia, a selection of giant rock figs and more! Rocky outcrops offer spectacular views from above.
*Please note: follow the coloured PAW PRINT at ALL times. If you find yourself on a route marked with arrows, you need to backtrack, as you’ve crossed onto the MTB trail. Do NOT follow the arrows, only the paw prints. No hiking is allowed on the cycling trails.
5 km Rooi-ivoor trail (advanced)
Starting at the leafy trail centre, the red trail winds lazily along the base of the koppie before hitting a sharp, punchy climb to the summit. Almost entirely shaded by thick tree cover, the path offers occasional breaks with incredible panoramic views. Keep an eye out for kudu along the way! Take a water bottle.
*This is an advanced hike. Allow 2 hours for completion. It is rocky and steep, but not dangerous.
5 km Visarend Trail (Easy)
The yellow trail begins at the trail centre, following the Rooi-ivoor route before branching off into the bush. It meanders through dense bushveld and open grassland, hugging the Ronan Erasmus dam before following a scenic tributary of the Apies River. This diverse route offers an extraordinary mix of savannah, river trails, and forest walks.
*This is an easy hike. Allow around 1 hour for completion.
10 km Ndebele Trail (advanced)
10 km Ndebele (advanced) – Red & Yellow
The red and yellow trails combined form a figure-of-eight hiking route, perfect for the fit and experienced hiker/runner. You will pass by the trail centre where you can stop for refreshments before switching trails.
*Allow three hours for completion.
13/11 km Naboom Hike (Easy) - Blue
Starting on the yellow trail, the blue hike heads toward the distant second koppie. This gentle route features various road crossings—stay alert and follow the blue PAW PRINTS. If you see arrows, you’ve hit the cycling path and must backtrack.
At the base of the koppie, choose your own adventure: stay straight for an easy path or turn left for a steep, technical loop. Both paths rejoin before the route merges back with the yellow trail after the river crossing.
*This trail is easy with no hazards on the way. Allow 2 or 2,5 hours for completion, depending on whether you do the extra loop or not. The extra loop is rocky and steep, but not dangerous.
